Typical cost

$119 to $234

National average about $168 per cleaning (Angi, Oct 2026; HomeAdvisor, Jun 2026). Taller homes, steep roofs, guards and heavy buildup cost more. Local prices vary, so get a written quote.

Ice dams and snow load

When snow melts on a warm roof and refreezes at the cold eaves, it can build a ridge of ice that traps water behind it. Gutters full of leaves make this worse because meltwater has nowhere to go. Heavy snow and ice can also bend gutters and pull hangers loose. Clear gutters before winter and check them after big storms.

Nor'easters and heavy rain

Coastal storms bring wind-driven rain and wet snow. A clogged gutter overflows fast and can send water toward your foundation or behind siding. Downspouts that drain well away from the house help.

How often to clean

Most homes do well with a cleaning in late fall after the leaves drop and another in spring after the snow melts. Homes under pines or big oaks and maples may need more. If you see water spilling over the edge, plants growing in the gutter, or icicles forming along the eaves, it is time.

Questions to ask a gutter company

  • Do you clear and flow test the downspouts, or just the gutters?
  • Do you bag and haul away the debris?
  • Are you insured for work at my home's height?
  • Will you tell me about loose hangers, leaks or ice damage you notice?
  • Is the price flat, by linear foot, or by home size?
